Since Ethical Waste took over the Ohakune transfer station in 2020, the site and survice has undergone a significant transformation. What began as a local initiative has grown into a major hub for sustainable waste management in the Ruapehu District. Through the Ethical Waste vision and dedication, we've expanded our reach, impact and diverted more materials from landfill each year. This has been embraced by a community that truly cares about the lifecycle of their items and working together towards zero waste.

Having started out with 4 paid employees, Ethical Waste has grown to now employ 14 locals from the area.

Sales generated through the shop are reinvested directly back into the space, helping us continually improve and develop a welcoming, inspiring retail environment for our customers.

As a social and environmental enterprise, we’re always looking for creative ways to give donated items—and materials rescued from landfill—a second life. Wherever possible, we upcycle these resources into shop displays, shelving, fixtures and unique features throughout the space, or simply have them available for sale.

It’s all part of our bigger goal: keeping useful materials in circulation, reducing waste, and showing what’s possible when we look at discarded items with a little creativity and imagination. Our shop is not just a place to buy second-hand—it’s a space to discover ideas, be inspired, and see waste differently.
